About Avery Professional Group
Avery Professional Group is a clinical leadership search firm working at the Director, Vice President, and C-suite level, with particular depth in Chief Medical Officer and Chief Nursing Officer appointments alongside chiefs of staff and medical directors. Clients span the full continuum of care — community and critical access hospitals, academic and regional health centers, federally qualified health centers, and outpatient and ambulatory organizations — throughout the United States and Canada. The firm’s sweet spot is organizations under 200 beds, where a single leadership hire moves the whole system.
Every search begins with a clear identification of the need and the problems the role is meant to solve, and the role gets defined from there rather than from a job description already in a drawer. Assessment and selection are built deliberately, using modern tools in the hands of experienced people. Because the process starts with the underlying problem, searches sometimes reshape the role itself: in one medical director recruitment, the work surfaced that two competing objectives had been combined into a single position that could not succeed as designed, and the structure was corrected before a candidate was ever presented.
What sets Avery apart is what happens after the offer is signed. Most clinical leaders are promoted or hired into leadership without ever having been trained or supported to lead, and physician leader retention runs well below its corporate equivalent as a result. Avery addresses this directly: every placement comes with six months of individual executive coaching, twice monthly, delivered by an external, certified coach who does not work for Avery — so the support is independent rather than self-serving. Coaching begins at selection rather than after the start date, and insight from the assessment process carries forward into onboarding. The integrated model is credited with increasing retention by more than 20% and time-to-effectiveness by more than 50%. Average placement tenure runs beyond three years, and every placement carries a 12-month replacement guarantee.
Avery places roughly two dozen leaders a year across North America and is deliberately not a high-volume firm; nearly all of its work arrives by referral, including repeat engagements with clients such as Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. That is by design. The conviction underneath the whole practice is a simple one — take care of the people who take care of us. Support the leaders, and they build the environments where clinical staff can do their best work and want to stay.
Kevin Kirkpatrick
CEO and Founder
Kevin has spent 25 years in recruitment, 18 of them building Avery Professional Group. He began his career recruiting in technology across North America before moving into healthcare roughly two decades ago, and he has led recruitment teams inside hospitals — including St. Michael’s Hospital and Humber River Hospital in Toronto. That experience means he has sat on the client’s side of the table through workforce planning, physician engagement, organizational structure, and the retention problems that follow a leadership vacancy.
He works from Bowmanville, Ontario, serving clients throughout Canada and the United States, and hosts Leadership That Stays, a podcast featuring conversations with clinical and physician leaders about what it actually takes to lead well in healthcare.
